Legend of Czech jazz, singer Jana Koubková was born in 1944 in Roztoky near Prague. Since the age of six, she has been singing in choirs, vocal groups and as a soloist. She became famous as a soloist in 1975 in Luděk Hulan‘s Jazz Sanatorium. She has worked in many styles from blues, swing, mainstream, bebop, Latin, free to world-ethno and fusion. She founded the Vokalíza festival for jazz, blues and rock singers. For six years, she worked at the Prague State Conservatory in the field of performance. She has participated in many festivals not only in Europe, but also in Cuba, Algeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Israel, and Morocco. She is also a successful composer of film music. She hosts her own radio programmes, publishes, and writes features, columns and poetry. Her life motto is: „Be prepared, that’s all“. She was the one to come up with the name for the award she receives today during one of the meetings at the MIRO Gallery at the St. Roch‘s Church.
