Jaroslav Moravčík is an outstanding Slovak dancer, choreographer and director, who studied folk dance at the Dance Conservatory and then folk dance choreography at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. He started his career in the Slovak State Traditional Dance Company. He created eight full-length programmes for this dance company. For seven years he led a ballet company in Mörbisch, Austria. He also co-founded the Slovak Chamber Ballet. As a choreographer, he has collaborated with many dance and theatre companies and his choreographies play a crucial role in many major entertainment programmes on Slovak and Czech television, as well as in films. In Slovakia, he collaborated on pieces such as Lemonade Joe, Nutcracker, Adam Šangala, Peter Pan, The Millennial Bee, Potters’ Ball (Hrnčiarsky bál), Marie Antoinette and others. In terms of his contribution in the Czech Republic, we can mention the Big Beat, Cabaret, and The Beggar’s Opera, Playing with the Devil, Don Juan, The Servant of Two Masters and many others. The typical features of his distinctive work include original expressions through movement, humour, an extraordinary sense of rhythm, dynamics and dance expression. He likes to use props and unconventional choreographic techniques. In his work, he utilises perfect knowledge of folklore material as well as the principles of classical and modern dance with an emphasis on rhythm. He currently leads the Atašé Dance Ensemble, a modern acoustic dance show. He has received several prestigious awards for his work in choreography and direction.
