A prominent Slovak composer and pedagogue Juraj Filas was born in 1955 in Košice. He studied composition and singing at the Prague Conservatory. In 1981 he graduated from the composition department of Jiří Pauer at the Academy of Performing Arts. He is the author of approximately a hundred opuses involving chamber, symphonic, cantatas, concertos, Te Deum, Requiem and opera. The themes of his work are articulate and the basis of his musical sensibility is tonal, growing out of the great tradition of European music. His works were performed on the most prominent stages all over the world. At Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Centre in New York, at the Tonhalle in Zurich, at the Prague Spring Festival, as well as in Vienna, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, London. Since 1985 he had taught composition at the HAMU in Prague and historical composition studies. He is a laureate of numerous singing and composing competitions. In 2008, he received the prestigious Gustav Mahler Prize from the European Union of Arts. He is the author of the Trebbia Awards theme song
